Womp Romp Trail Race
September 24, 2021 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Saturday, Oct. 23, will mark the first edition of the 10-mile Womp Romp Trail Race in Hingham. The race will wind through scenic Wompatuck State Park, offering participants a glimpse of the treasures the park holds. All proceeds from the race will benefit the Friends of Wompatuck, a nonprofit group that provides maintenance for the park and educates people on its history and offerings.
The Friends of Wompatuck is an all-volunteer not-for-profit group that was incorporated in early 2006 for the purpose of educating the public about the park’s uses and historical value as well as helping the state Department of Conservation and Recreation preserve, maintain, and enhance the assets, history, and unique features within the park.
“This event is such a great combination: highlighting the beauty of the park, giving trail runners a new local course, and supporting a great nonprofit group who lovingly cares for the park,” Rob Jeffers, co-founder of the race, said of the event.
Jeffers, Matt Hoadley, and Joe Regan set out to raise awareness of the park and to offer a new trail-running challenge in a geographic area where options are few. “I have to commend my colleagues, who are more avid runners than I,” said Regan. “They recognized this gap and encouraged the establishment of the run. We’re a great team, but we’re new to this. Why hasn’t his been done before? We may find out.”
Runners of all experience levels are encouraged to participate, and volunteers are welcome for race day and prior-day setup. Registration for runners and walkers (as well as volunteers) can be accomplished directly through Ultrasignup.com.
