Jason McCann

Running for Select Board, 3 Year Term

email: mccannforhull@gmail.com
website: www.mccannforhull.com

What is your education and work experience? How did that education/work experience prepare you for the elected position you seek?
I feel my background and education in urban planning and law will serve me will as a Selectboard member. The Town’s Master Plan and local bylaws are the foundation for structuring how a town looks and how it is developed; this requires lots of input from the citizens. As a lawyer, I intend to think thoughtfully, fairly and apply the facts as presented. My campaign theme is “listening and working” and I think my professional background speaks to that.

What is your experience in public service, if any, in Hull?
I have served on the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Zoning Bylaw Committee and Community Preservation Committee. More recently, I have been very active in local organizations including the Paragon Carousel. I helped start the Hull Pride gay pride organization. I was also successful with the Save the Ferry and Fort Revere Tower preservation efforts.

What do you plan to accomplish in this role that you seek/what is your platform for this position?
1. Ensure Hull is getting our share of state and federal funds to build and improve climate resilient infrastructure- roads, seawalls, electrical grid, sewer, gas, etc.
2. Collaborate productively with new state leadership to get more support for the Nantasket Beach Reservation and other properties where the state has a vested interest.
3. Work with Town Hall staff to ensure municipal services are delivered efficiently, effectively and in a modern way
4. Move policies forward on issues like open space, affordable housing and services for seniors that reflect the input of Hull citizens
5. Work with local leaders, the Chamber, landlords, existing businesses and the Town’s Economic Development Committee to make sure we are fully utilizing our existing retail and commercial space
6. Act with transparency and as much communication as possible with the people of Hull

What do you plan to accomplish in this role that you seek/what is your platform for this position?
In regards to ideas for the potential uses of 13 acres of HRA property, an ” All of the Above ” compromise approach, with at least ten acres of the 13 acres for passive recreational public open space and event space and resident and beach parking, is my initial intent, while the HRA is still in the early stages of the process. Since contiguous open space is not possible because the property is 8 different parcels separated by the DCR Bergan Parking Lot and Nantasket Ave. I accept the approach of 3 parks with the entire Bayside parcel park of 5 acres and the Phipps Street parcel 1 park extending Veterans Memorial Park to Hull Shore Drive and the DCR Cook Comfort Station and the central park to the south of Edgewater Road should be at least as big as a football field of public space called Surfside Park. All 3 parks should be protected by open space deed restrictions in perpetuity, not through temporary zoning changes. I agree with the affordable housing set asides for Hull residents and employees that have been approved for inclusion into any potential residential development. I want to bring the history of Hull back .. and into the future. I’d love to see a replica of the old Nantasket hotels era of Architecture. Immediate improvements should include permitting and construction of Edgewater Road extension to Hull Shore Drive extension to relieve traffic congestion and improve egress from HRA and DCR beach parking lots with cars queued up and waiting inside the lots and not on Phipps Street creating a bottleneck and safety issues for all those residents who live north of the property. If elected to the HRA, I intend to work hard to produce results that will benefit our community. During this planning process, I intend to consider all ideas presented, and I intend to present many ideas for changes. In particular, changes should be considered to the HRA Option 2 draft Urban Renewal Plans and Hull’s two-way roads plan to be in alignment with the Commonwealth Department of Conservation and Recreation Nantasket Beach Masterplan, which would allow for the widened boardwalk along the seawall with benches and shade structures, as well as the raised two-way bicycles lanes. Please support Pat Finn for Redevelopment Authority for progress not pause… 60 years of pause is long enough. Progress to benefit Hull residents and taxpayers should include jobs and tax revenues and housing choices. Hull is a beautiful peninsula surrounded by open space and this property will become beautiful open space parks with balanced economic improvements instead of empty space.

What is your education and work experience? How did that education/work experience prepare you for the elected position you seek?
I have more than forty years of experience being involved in town government starting in my hometown of Natick MA. To compliment my civic involvement I received a degree in Economics(SocialSystems) from Umass Amherst and a Master’s degree in Regional Planning from Cornell University. I have been involved in many community projects and programs here in Hull and other communities that focused on both community and economic development.

What is your experience in public service, if any, in Hull?
I serve on the Hull Chamber of Commerce Board, The Paragon Carousel Board, Hull No Place For Hate Board, The Hull Historical Commission, and the Town Economic Development Committee. In addition, I was very involved in the Hull 375th parade and events. I am also active in both the Temple Beth Sholom and Temple Israel of Nantasket.

What do you plan to accomplish in this role that you seek/what is your platform for this position?
I have a ten point platform that is on my website www.steven4hull.com. In summary my goal is to make Hull better for all and more importantly at this time in our history, to take advantage of the change in Town Manager, majority of the Select Board, action on the HRA property and the appointment of a new DCR Commissioner.

Moraiba (Mora) Reyes

Running for Select Board, 3 Year Term

email: mrreyes@asa.org
website: https://www.facebook.com/Reyes4Hull

What is your education and work experience? How did that education/work experience prepare you for the elected position you seek?
I hold a B.A on Economics from Santa Maria University, and a Finance Graduate certificate from Cornel University. As a member of the Select Board, I will draw from experience in Finance and Non-profit management, performing economic analysis and budget and planning to address specific problems in this town, evaluating information and organizing alternative courses of action. I will work to develop plans and implement strategies to successfully address these problems.

What is your experience in public service, if any, in Hull?
If elected, this will be my first assignment in service to the Town and local government. However, I have been a member of the finance team at American Student Assistance (ASA) for more than 20 years. A private non-for-profit in Boston, “ASA” is a legal entity organized and operated for a collective, public or social benefit. Its mission is to help students know themselves, know their options, and make informed decisions to achieve their education and career goals.

ASA is a mission-driven, public-purpose organization, and our greatest strategic asset is our people. ASA’s overall objective is to build a generation of successful individuals who are confident, competent, and ready to realize the future they envision.

What do you plan to accomplish in this role that you seek/what is your platform for this position?
In this term, I will lead the effort to update and implement Hull’s Master Plan, which will guide spending and development framework for the first time in 20 years. Just to highlight some of the potential benefits of having a Plan: – Give decision makers across all committees a steady point of reference for taking action. – Provide facts on existing conditions and trends, and better understand around the impact of future decisions. – Describe where and what type of development our residents want, consistent with community goals. – Enable wise use of our tax $$ and resources, support prioritization around which projects to undertake in the short and long term.

Dan Kernan

Running for Redevelopment Authority, 5 Year Term

email: hello@dankernanforhra.com
website: https://www.dankernanforhra.com/

What is your education and work experience? How did that education/work experience prepare you for the elected position you seek?
I have a B.S. degree in Environmental Resource Engineering with a focus on groundwater modeling. Decades of Software Development experience until I retired as the VP of Content, Market Data and Online Services for Fidelity.com. Hundreds of employees, tens of millions in budgets, I am very very comfortable managing conflicting needs from various stakeholders, finding common ground to bring very complex projects to successful completion. I am now a 64-year-old math teacher who went back to work to make sure kids struggling with math don’t grow up thinking they’re just “not good at it.”

What is your experience in public service, if any, in Hull?
I coached soccer when my youngest was in elementary school. I built sets for years of the plays my daughter was in at HHS. I volunteered for the Hull Schools Strategic Plan Committee with then superintendent Mike Devine. I volunteered for the Jacobs Math Club. And for 28 years running my family has hosted a 1000+ egg Easter egg hunt for our neighbors on Hampton Circle.

What do you plan to accomplish in this role that you seek/what is your platform for this position?
If voted onto the board, I’d like to invest in developing the ideas that have been put forth by the citizens of Hull into alternate options that the citizens can compare. That way the town can be presented with options to choose from, rather than modifications to an Urban Renewal Plan already fully cooked. All HRA plans have moved forth leading with condos, commercial space, and hotel construction as fundamental to their development plan. What if we reversed that thinking? Dreamed bigger? The citizens need (and deserve) to see alternate plans that are based on their ideas and preferences: contiguous open space, community center, event locations, artful natural landscaping, just to mention a few. Citizens could then choose among plans, not just be asked to react to one. Importantly, whatever the HRA develops should fit into a larger town of Hull strategic plan. And finally, in the meantime … while years of planning continue, the HRA space can be better utilized —and beautified.

Emily Garr

Running for Trustees of the Public Library, 2 Year Term

email: ergarr@hotmail.com
website:

What is your education and work experience? How did that education/work experience prepare you for the elected position you seek?
I have been a school librarian for nearly 15 years and have worked with students in PreK-grade 8. I’m now the Director of Library Services at Derby Academy in Hingham. Being a librarian is truly my calling and I actively stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in the field. I’m continuously purchasing relevant books and resources for my library’s collection and developing programming to increase engagement, such as book clubs and author visits, to ensure that the library is a hub of activity and belonging in our school community. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Holy Cross, an MA in English (Literature) from UMass Boston, and an MEd in Library Studies from Salem State. I’ve been in education for over 20 years and love working with students of all ages.

What is your experience in public service, if any, in Hull?
I was appointed Trustee of the Hull Public Library earlier this year. I learned that there were two vacancies, so I attended a Select Board meeting in January and went through an interview process along with my fellow incumbent Curt Miller. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed participating in Trustees meetings and discussing our library’s past, present, and future with other Trustees and our wonderful Library Director.

What do you plan to accomplish in this role that you seek/what is your platform for this position?
Keeping the library a relevant and active part of the community is a top priority. I’d like to develop the HPL’s “Library of Things” to include items that would benefit our citizens. This could include beach items, gear for fishing and camping, tech tools, even baking or cooking tools that might not be feasible to purchase. I’d also prioritize creating more book clubs for children, seniors, and all residents to give Hull the opportunity to build community through literature. Books can be a great tool to bring people together and open up discussions. Finally, I’d like to help the people of Hull see the speakers and authors that they are interested in having visit our library. I’ve brought lots of authors and speakers to my library at Derby Academy and would be thrilled to help bring these opportunities to our town as well.

What is your education and work experience? How did that education/work experience prepare you for the elected position you seek?
My college experience was to learn and explore, by living in another part of the country and studying abroad. My career has been dedicated to learning and passing on what I have learned for practical application, as a Technical Writer, Project Manager, teacher of music and dance, and now National Organizer for nonpartisan electoral reform (ranked choice voting). I started out as a consultant, in a different industry every few months, and libraries allowed me to start the job with a level of competence. I gained a whole new appreciation for the refuge and relief libraries can bring, having a free place to go with my small children, to play and relax together. The library is for us at all ages and stages.

What is your experience in public service, if any, in Hull?
I am the Clerk for the Hull No Place for Hate Committee since 2019, revitalizing and reorganizing that Committee, and organizing community events online and in person. If you got a No Place for Hate sign or did the Take a Stand in the Sand, we’ve probably met!

What do you plan to accomplish in this role that you seek/what is your platform for this position?
I want to keep the community informed of library programs, report requests and feedback to to the Director (who has transformed the building and collection – please visit if it’s been a while!), especially considering middle schoolers and seniors. I have 2 middle schoolers. That’s an age when social pressure is intense, and reading often drops off. Libraries can foster social connections and offer a larger perspective than they experience in their peer group, through print and online materials, even developing skills and hobbies with our Library of Things!

What is your experience in public service, if any, in Hull?
Hull Advisory Board, 2010-2013; Lifetime Member, Hull Parent-Teacher Organization; Hull School Committee, 2020-present

What do you plan to accomplish in this role that you seek/what is your platform for this position?
My name is Ernest Minelli, and my priorities for a prospective second term of service on the Hull School Committee from 2023 to 2026 are to:

· Ensure a smooth educational transition for our students districtwide as we re-configure the grade levels at each of our school buildings between 2023 and 2025 to promote even better learning opportunities for our pupils.

· Work closely with fellow committee members and with our school leadership team to realize even greater levels of educational excellence, balancing traditional learning skills with innovative technological proficiency.

· Support efforts to promote thoughtful dialogue among our secondary-school students and their families about prospective college and career opportunities, coupled with the advancement of those pre-requisite steps necessary to achieve such goals.

· Emphasize literacy-based opportunities district-wide, especially for our elementary school students and families. For example, I support our efforts to fund a staffed librarian position for the Jacobs School as a beneficial component of our district’s overall literacy program.

· Advocate for increased levels of engagement with parents and families to facilitate even more effective collaboration efforts within our schools and our community.

· Anticipate potential budgetary needs and grant opportunities as we navigate the context of larger financial challenges impacting the “macro” economy.

Throughout my first term of service on the school committee, I have worked diligently to serve the interests of our students, families, educators, and taxpayers. I understand that the strength of our school district is made possible by the significant commitment of our community members’ time, talent, and treasure.

Our recent collaborative efforts to study the Best Educational Use of School Facilities presented us with proper guidance to inform the thoughtful reconfiguration of our school facilities. I am seeking a second term on the Hull School Committee to continue the progress that we are making so that we may maximize our students’ learning opportunities.

On a personal note, I am a proud graduate of the Hull Public Schools, and I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in history from Harvard College, plus a Master’s Degree in education from Stanford University. Professionally, I manage an educational consulting practice that serves students and families both in the USA and internationally.

Most importantly, please vote on Monday, May 15th for those candidates whom you believe will represent Hull’s students, families, educators, and taxpayers the most effectively in the coming three years. Thank you very much!
