Paired with quotations from great thinkers, and the short story "Rowboat" from author Peter H. Spectre, the photographs in Afloat on the Tide offer a reflective journey through the strikingly beautiful world of small wooden craft.

"No matter what condition a wooden dinghy is in, it is always a classic. . . . Every photograph tells its own story. Play a game and try to guess how each boat in this book is used. Some dinghies transport people while others carry goods. Some are for leisure and others for commerce. But regardless of its purpose, time spent in a dinghy is always special. . ."  -Gary Jobson

About the Authors:
Nancy Rich has been photographing the rowboats of the Atlantic Coast for a decade.  She has exhibited her collection, Nor'eastern Dinghies, in numerous galleries and shows in New England, and her photographs appear in Gary Jobson's film Maine Built Boats: Art and Soul.

Peter H. Spectre, a renowned writer with a lifelong appreciation of the sea and its traditions, is the former editor of WoodenBoat magazine and the current editor of Maine Boats, Homes, and Harbors. He is the author of A Mariner's Miscellany, and the annual Mariner's Book of Days (Sheridan House).

You are invited for a Winter Woods Walk this Saturday, February 6, to get to know the Weir River Woods.  We’ll meet at 9 a.m. at the Estuary Center on George Washington Boulevard to carpool to the new Chatham Street entrance.   We’ll be nature detectives looking for evidence of who has been here and what comes next.  This time of the year you can also see further—the rock cliffs, valleys, estuary and even Hull Wind 2.  Sponsored by the Hull Land Conservation Trust.
